Open Source & Commercial Licensing

Beyond running our hosted DNS service, we develop and maintain our own client-side software — tools that install and run on your infrastructure. This software is released under a dual license.

Our own software, your infrastructure

The dns_integrations package includes monitoring plugins, configuration templates, and integration scripts that run on your servers — not ours. This is distinct from the open source components we use internally to operate the service. Because dns_integrations is installed and executed on your side, its license matters to you directly.

Free

GNU General Public License v3 (GPLv3)

The default license. Free to use, modify, and redistribute — provided that any distributed modifications remain open source under the same GPLv3 terms.

  • Use for any purpose — personal, commercial, or non-commercial
  • Modify freely and distribute your changes
  • Distributed modifications must be released under GPLv3
  • Source code of modifications must be made available

Commercial License

Required when you cannot or do not want to comply with the GPLv3 open-source requirement — for example, when integrating dns_integrations into a proprietary or closed-source product.

  • Keep your modifications private — no source disclosure required
  • Embed in closed-source or proprietary commercial products
  • Redistribute as part of your own offering without GPLv3 obligations
  • Optional priority support and updates available

What does this mean for you?

I'm setting up Nagios or Zabbix monitoring for my own infrastructure.

The GPLv3 license covers this use case. You can install, use, and adapt the plugin freely. If you distribute your modified version, it must remain open source under GPLv3.

We're building a commercial product and want to bundle dns_integrations.

You need a commercial license. Any product you ship to customers — whether on-premise software, a hosted platform, or a managed service — that includes dns_integrations requires a commercial license if you cannot comply with GPLv3.

Can I fork and improve the plugin and keep my changes private?

Only if you have a commercial license. Under GPLv3, any distributed modified version must be released under the same license with source code available.

How is commercial licensing priced?
